Here's what's happening with your favorite proxy-site for April/May

Middle Earth Strategy Battle Game

We've got dozens of files coming onto the site soon for GW's Middle Earth game. We'll probably dump them in the store all at once.

These are all 3D scans but they aren't the world's greatest quality. They aren't quite as bad as a 90/7 but not really a solid 90/8 - so we're ranking them a 90/7.5. What this means is they are passable for tabletop games once you print them out and slap some paint on them, but I doubt you'll want to put these in a display case.

For that reason, we'll be selling these files at a reduced price - cheaper than our normal files. So pick them up if you were thinking about playing this game.

It's very unlikely that we'll ever get any better versions of these files later. Middle Earth isn't that popular and is barely supported by GW. So these are the best proxies you'll get for this game.

In House 3D Scanning

Here's what's happening with the NerdEmpire in-house 3D scanning: We've got the machine all setup and we're able to make really high-quality 3D scans in-house now. However, it's extremely time consuming because it's all manual. We're working on setting up the automation portion so we can turn on the machine and it'll rotate the miniature and scan it automatically. This will speed up the time to create the scans and (more importantly) allow us to do other things while it's scanning - we don't have to sit there and interact with it for hours.

Once we have the automation setup, we'll run some test scans of a few single models. After that, we've got to learn how to do scan cleaning. We've got ZBrush all setup with a large pen tablet. Cleaning is fairly easy: it's removing any sprue-bits that were accidently stuck on the model during scanning, filling any holes, smoothing out the rough patches on the model, and sharpening the crevases and edges. This isn't complicated but it'll take a little while for us to get the workflow down so we can clean files quickly and efficiently.

We'll make an annoucement on the News section when we're officially ready. We'd like to have a system where you guys can make recommendations and vote to see what we want to add to our store.

Timeline

Here's a rough idea at what's coming up for NerdEmpire:

  • APR: NerdEmpire 3D Scanning starts! We'll setup a way to put in your requests or send us unused sprues to scan - hopefully we won't get overwhelmed with a giant backlog. We'll keep you posted!
  • MAY: Subscriptions! Early access to files, discounts, access to a boatload of third-party upgrades and files, ways to put in high-priority requests --- something like that. We'll figure it out.
  • JUNE: A build-your-own-bundle option. We've been kicking around a feature that will let you build a bundle for yourself for the same faction. For example, if you were thinking about starting a Custodes army but didn't like our bundle, you could make your own Custodes bundle with the models you wanted for a discount.
  • SUMMER: Migrating the site to non-DMCA compliant servers to prevent takedowns.
